Arizona's First Triple Digit Day 2013
It was another beautiful sunny Arizona day.  It's springtime; the desert is in full bloom. While other US cities are still experiencing cold blistery weather, there's a whole lot of sun here.
At 8am my husband and I had our morning cup of coffee on our backyard patio enjoying the mild 66° temperature. SURPRISE! Temperature raised quickly. The first Arizona triple digit weather was recorded at 1:15pm. Although the temperature increased to the 100° prediction, it was dry heat - a perfect day to have an open house.

Happy Earth Day!
 Today is the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day, dedicated to raising consciousness about environmental issues, is now celebrated by over a billion people world-wide. I raise orchids sharing them with all around me at home and at work. I enjoy each for their unique shape, heavenly aroma and the vibrant colors.  I have orchids in every room of my home, in my home office and my office at Long Realty.

Merrie Monarch Hilo Hawaii 2013
By day, Hilo Civic Auditorium buzzed with shoppers, hula dancers, singers and performers. Food and floral aromas permeated throughout the auditorium. People stopped and watched the unending Hawaiian entertainment. Among the few keiki kanie's (young men) dancing and performing hula for over a hundred people in the Hilo Civic Auditorium. They were between 8 and 10 years of age. It was their first attempt to dance hula for a commanding public. Onlookers watched, smiled, clapped and gave them the traditional Hawaiian Hanahou! They tried. The public loved their attempt. The keiki's loved the encouragement, reminiscent of a dry sponge in water. Their parents stood by watching, and clapping with an aire of accomplishment. It was another positive aspect of learning to dance hula at a young age. Hula dancers maintain confidence nature throughout life. We've made the mistakes, practiced and refined the dance. Our adult life dance is tranquil.
30 hula groups from all over the world danced hula this week at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo. The dancers were phoenominal, chanting, dancing with smiles beaming confidence and love.
"Hula is language of heart. Therefore hula is the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people."

Another Reason Why You Should Recommend Using a Licensed Professional

When a property inspection reveals problems with plumbing, roofing, electrical, etc., I always recommend that the buyers insist the repairs be done by a licensed contractor in a workmanship like manner. In our area the local laws and HOA regulations require this for major repairs, but it's a good idea even for minor changes. A friend of mine just sent me these photos that graphically illustrate why.
The previous homeowners were an elderly couple who had tried to upgrade their home but pinched pennies at every turn. They apparently did some of the work themselves and hired inexpensive handymen for the rest. As a result, when they sold the home, the inspector found faucets plumbed backward, outlets wired with reverse polarity, hot water heater overflow piping that looked like a pretzel, and outlets installed on the outside of the house without waterproof covers. Of course the buyer asked that these items be corrected, and this is the "waterproof" cover that the sellers put over one of those outside outlets:

50th Merrie Monarch Festival
Hilo Hawaii is HULA Hawaii!
The Merrie Monarch Festival honors King David Kalakaua, Hawaii's last king. King David was born on November 16, 1836 in Puawaina, Oahu. He was elected King of the Hawaiian Islands in 1874. Hawaiian culture and arts reached new heights during King Kalakaua's reign. The King was extremely talented; he was an inventor, musician and composer.
King Kalakaua is know as the "Merrie Monarch". On January 20, 1891, his reign came to an end. The yearly Merrie Monarch Festival is dedicated to the memory of King David La'amea Kalakaua.
This year is the 50th year celebration of Merrie Monarch Festival that's held in Hilo, Hawaii. Tickets for the 3,000 seats went on sale on December 26, 2012. Ticket envelopes could not be postmarked prior to December 26. Over 20,000 ticket envelopes were received. Fortunately, I was one of the 3,000 to secure a ticket.
Hilo, Hawaii is my hometown. It has the small town feeling, ideal for raising a family. There are two high schools in Hilo, St. Joseph's High School and Hilo High School. Tourism is the primary industry.
It rains almost every day in Hilo. The yearly rainfall this time of year is about 14 inches. The damp humid weather is ideal for orchids; there are orchid farms everywhere. Golf in Hilo is a little difficult in comparison to the lush golf courses on the opposite side of the island.
